Like most indie games of any note, this game shows a lot of skill under the hood, but nothing exceptional. The original Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System is more entertaining on every level, despite this game doing its best to put dopamine hits throughout the game via upgrades and various tasks per level.
Unfortunately, the game gets wrong the primary thing that a game of this type needs, something that Mario Bros. got right in the 90s: Feel, aka, juice, aka FUN! There’s not enough animations, there’s not enough weight to movements, there’s not enough “juice” on attacks. The combat feels clunky.
The art is charming, the cut-scenes are above-and-beyond, but in the end, when you move the joystick to the right, and the character starts moving with no transition animation, you can tell already there’s going to be a lot missing, and there is.
This game developer should have spent half the time on the upgrade system and twice the amount of time on the thing you do 90% of the time: moving around.
Ori and the Blind Forest, Owlboy—these games knew how to be fun to the point where just running around, confused and lost, is more fun than most games of their type are at any point.
